A good departure last night from New Jersey, but little in the way of replacement. Birds continued to move during the light and variable winds which eventually turned SW this morning. Many good reports yesterday indicate that migration on the 22nd was high. Higbee’s beach was no exception with a great morning flight of songbirds including an enormous push of Baltimore Orioles. Hopefully Vince or someone else there can post the list when they get a chance. Here’s the radar from last night. You may notice that the colors are different than usual; this is because the radar is set on “clear air mode”. This means the radar is more sensitive, and therefore the “explosive” appearance correlates to less activity than in the “precipitation” mode (blue/green). Still, good numbers of birds are seen departing in the hours after sunset.
