Birds moving over Jersey

This morning the radar shows a modest amount of birds moving over our area. Birds are seen entering the radar soon after sunset, and continuing until sunrise. Velocity plots show that some of this signal is indeed birds, but interestingly no nocturnal flight calls were heard at midnight, when the radar shows good movement over central NJ.

Previous report
Chris Aquila mentioned the passing of a front tonight, which has come in and out of the forecast discussion on the NWS site. Until now, the prediction was for the front to fizzle out to our east, and have little to no effect on our immediate weather. The latest predictions mention winds switching to the NE after midnight, then East by morning. Birds are currently moving out of Maine in modest numbers, so it appears that the NE will see some action this evening. With an easterly flow by morning, I would guess the best locations would be inland. I’m eager to see tomorrow’s reports!
Thanks, Chris, for the heads-up.

Cheers

David

  1. Hmmm…
I hit Rutgers Gardens this morning with little success. There were good numbers of Robins, N. Flickers, and Chipping Sparrows, but everything else was in low numbers.

    Migrants included:
Empid sp. (likely Least, but had only a quick look)
    Red-eyed Vireo
    Black-and-white Warbler
    American Redstart
    Wood Thrush
