No Migration Detected

The northeast is on temporary shutdown as the remnants of Ivan make their way into our area. The cold front to our west will push across our area today, causing sometimes heavy precipitation as it interacts with Ivan’s mess. Overnight high pressure will build in behind the front and probably allow for some good migration to our north. It is still unclear how much of New Jersey the front will clear by Saturday morning, but so far it looks like only the NW corner. The front will eventually clear New Jersey throughout the day on Saturday and NE winds will build in behind it. If the Central Flyway is any indication, this front could bring some good birds our way.

So, if you’re planning to do some birding, check the winds before you head out to tell you whether the front has passes. Also, check the real-time radar for Friday night and Saturday before sunrise to see if birds are indeed moving into our area. I’ll be at Stokes forest (class trip) through Saturday afternoon, and then Bar Harbor, ME for a pelagic trip on Sunday, so I won’t be updating the site until Monday morning.

Here’s the radar from 9pm last night to 5am this morning:

and here’s a single image of the nation at 9pm (notice all the circular migration signals on the central flyway):

Good Birding
