Blake and I hit Holgate and Barnegat (Long Beach Island, NJ) yesterday and had a fantastic time. This photo is of the female Snowy Owl from Holgate. If you head down there, the bird has been hanging around the southern tip, on the dunes. The dunes are viewable from the ocean beach side. Please obey the marked perimeter and DO NOT venture onto the dunes. If the owl is near the dune line please respect it and back off even further. Hopefully the bird will stick around for awhile if it’s not bothered.
Also, here’s some video of the 1000+ Northern Gannets off of Barnegat. The video is about 8mb, so it’ll take awhile to download on a dial-up.

Wonderful owl photo…wonderful to have a connection to Holgate, and to Island beach SP here in my computer in NE Pennsylvania…these are precious places, New Jersey jewels.
Great photo! Your photo is so close-up and detailed it makes the viewer feel as if they are there! Great job. I had seen the Snowy in Brigantine refuge two years ago but could never get that close to it.
Thank you Trudy and Steve. Yeah, seeing that bird for the first time was exhilarating to say the least. Then to couple that with the Boreal Owl in Central Park…to think that I’ve seen these two before ever seeing Saw-whet or Long-eared is pretty funny (actually, it means I need to get my butt back outside). As for snowies, there was a recent report of one at Shark River, which I would think should be a good place to get close looks.
Cheers
