Light Migration Over NJ

Updated

Ben and I had the pleasure of assisting Bill Elrick this morning at his banding station in West Milford. I’m not sure how much help we were, given our lack of sleep and overall clumsiness, but we sure had a great time! Ben actually made a passing comment about a Townsend’s Warbler which we chuckled at…little did we know one would show up at Garret Mountain this morning. Oh well, you can’t be in two places at once. We did have the pleasure of seeing a Connecticut Warbler, as well as witnessing Bill’s speed walking skills (the man can really fly!).

As for migration, last night was slow but there was definitely some movement over our area. The radar loops are from sunset last night through sunrise this morning. Tonight is already poor for migration, with winds light out of the Southwest. Winds should switch to out of the Northwest after midnight and eventually out of the North by tomorrow morning. Depending on when the winds switch, we may see some migration tonight, but it’s doubtful. Tomorrow night should see a much better migration event with Saturday shaping up for a good birding day. Hawkwatching should also be picking up tomorrow and into the weekend, so get to your local ridge!

Good Birding
