No birds moving tonight

So far it appears that migration has shut down. West winds are howling, making for some crappy conditions. It looks like this weather will hold through tomorrow night, and then turn to rain/snow on Thursday night. Unless things change, this week will likely be a lull in northbound bird movement. Have no fear, more birds are coming soon!

Field Notes: Ben and I spent a few hours at Sandy Hook this afternoon. We concentrated on the bike path across from the missile, trying to keep out of the heavy winds. What we saw were large flocks of Song Sparrows, Juncos, Am. Robins, Red-winged Blackbirds, Cedar Waxwings, Golden-crowned Kinglets, House Finches, and 3-at-once Yellow-bellied Sapsuckers. Phoebes were in all over the place as well. We had a single “yellow-breasted” warbler come shooting across the path and perch (facing away, of course) for a few seconds before continuing on through the vegetation.
We tried really hard to re-locate the bird, but, well, you know how those things sometimes go. Anyway, given that birds are not moving tonight, if anyone ventures out to the Hook, keep an eye out for the mystery bird!

  1. hmmm…Chris Vogel thinks it was a Pine Warbler, which in all likelihood it was…although I tried to rule out Pine when I saw it, the look was pretty quick. I can’t make the call based on probability, but at the same time, I can’t rule out Pine Warbler. Aghhh, another bird filed under B.L.D.

    Cheers

    David

err…I’m convinced, it was a Pine Warbler. Thanks for keeping me on the straight-n-narrow Chris.
