Birds were on the move last night.
The base reflectivity image below covers the period between sunset last night through about 8:30pm (the Rutgers feed for the base reflectivity is not downloading correctly, so I’m missing most of the night). The base velocity covers sunset last night through just before sunrise this morning, and can give you an idea of the intensity of migration even without the complete reflectivity image.
Heavy migration occurred over the Southeast US last night, with highest intensities across Florida and Georgia. Very little came over from the Caribbean since they were under WNW winds. The Mid-Atlantic experienced a mix of low-to-medium activity, with the lowest in the Carolinas and the highest in New Jersey/Delaware/Maryland. Unfortunately for us, it appears that more birds were leaving than were coming in, probably due to the strong line of thunderstorms to our south. The radar showed migration extending to our north as far as Maine.
It is also worth noting that the central flyway experienced another flight last night, with heavy migration along the Gulf Coast moving up into the mid-west.
