Going in through the out-door

Here’s the radar from sunset last night through sunrise this morning. Since the frontal passage winds have switched around to the north. Both the Fort Dix and Dover radars show objects moving from north –> south in the early evening, which we can safely rule out as birds. That changes, though, late last night, as birds push into New Jersey from the Southwest. We actually do get a nice influx of birds despite the opposing winds (which weren’t very strong to begin with). You can see the directionality of movement by checking the velocity, but it’s also apparent in the composite image as birds move from one radar station to the other…pretty cool! Birds from yesterday probably stuck around- so densities should have increased at places like Garret and Sandy Hook (on account of the w–>e movements).

Good Birding

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and 1 hour for the regional composite

  1. Hi, I don’t know that much about radar yet. I was wondering why you feel you can safely rule out wrong-way birds in the north-to-south movement?

    Cheers,
    Nick
