Cold front moves through over night

A cold front moved over our area last night, bringing with it westerly winds which will turn northwesterly by this morning, and open up the northeast for significant migration tonight. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 5:00am this morning:

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

As far as I can tell, no birds migrated over New Jersey last night. The velocity images show a S–>N flow for most of the night, switching to westerly flow after the passing of the front. Whether some birds did decide to lift off, or made it through the front as it passed, is unclear- although based on the radar alone I suspect not. Unlike the front that passed between 9/11 and 9/12, we don’t see a band of activity pushing into New Jersey following the front (see the regional composite). Again, if you look at the regional composite, you can see some heavy activity over Maryland and southern Pennsylvania and some of this makes its way into Delaware as the front passes, but it seems like it’s too far south to affect New Jersey. It’ll be interesting to see if anything shows up on the morning flight today, or anywhere in the state for that matter. Keep an ear and eye to the sky tonight though, as we should experience some heavy migration!
