And the west wind blows…

Strange thing that west wind is. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through sunrise this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

With west winds blowing over the last two nights, migration has been pretty slow over the region. Judging by the regional composite, very little moved into the state from our immediate north. Interestingly though, there was a moderate push of birds from the west, to our southeast, setting up coastal locations for good birding possibilities. Cape May is a good bet this morning, as the radar indicates that most of the movement was into the southern half of the state, and with the strong westerly winds we would expect that birds were pushed to the coast. Please come back and tell me what you see!
Good Birding

  1. Sandy Hook–got a late start and didn’t stay very long. Best birds for me were 3 Nelson’s and 3 Saltmarsh Sharp-tailed Sparrows, and a Tenn Warbler foraging in goldenrod below eye-level. Also Merlin, a Gray Ghost, RB Nut, 2 flyover Pipits, a Dunlin, 1 of each Yellowlegs, RC Kinglet, Palms, etc. Seen by others were OC Warbler and CT Warbler, among others.
