Southwest winds again triggered some moderate migration over New Jersey, at least until the big storms moved in early this morning. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 7:30am this morning. Sorry it’s so late… banana-chocolate-chip pancakes for a wonderful pregnant wife must take precedent some times… I know you understand.
Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.
Movement across the radar was on a SW–>NE trajectory, on very calm winds. Northwest winds were anticipated at all levels, but were only present in the upper atmosphere, allowing birds to migrate closer to the surface (as is evident by the smaller, concentrated signal around the radar). Early morning thunderstorms appear to have shut down migration, which could result in some birdier-than-average conditions on the ground. Central Jersey, and the NE coast should be checked today.
Good Birding
