While at 10:30pm last night it looked like birds might be making a bid for the Garden State, northwest winds appear to have put the kibosh on the whole things before it could materialize. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 5:00am this morning.
Frames are every 1/2 hour for reflectivity and velocity, and every hour for the regional composite. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.
The regional composite shows it best, where just after sunset birds can be seen entering the radars across the southeast, including Virginia. The Dover radar shows birds entering the southern extent of the radar, and moving towards the Delmarva Peninsula through Midnight. Both the Dover and Fort Dix radars show some movement from W–>E around the immediate vicinity of the radar which I’m attributing to “noise”, or some signal other than birds…as winds were generally westerly, and the movement doesn’t show enough northerly direction to suggest birds moving in a crosswind. Therefore the only significant increase in birds for the region should be the western shore of the Delmarva Peninsula. What’s the bright side, you ask? The bright side is that all those birds moving over the south last night will be making their way up into the mid-Atlantic once favorable conditions return to the region… stay tuned!
Good Birding
