With the skies clear and the winds aloft out of the N/NE, birds once again took to the air just after sunset. Here’s the radar from 7:00pm last night through 5:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

By the looks of the northeast composite image, the entire northeastern and mid-Atlantic US experienced some migration last night. Interestingly, over New Jersey, it appears that the southern portion of the state (as well as the Delmarva peninsula) experienced a heavy exodus out of the region, whereas the northern half of the state picked up only a modest amount of new birds. That said, there was a nice trajectory of birds heading from Long Island directly over Sandy Hook last night, and the northeast winds should effectively push birds into the interior parts of the state this morning. Best bets for today will likely be the inland ridges and the Delaware floodplain (central/north NJ/PA) and the Delaware Bay shore (southern NJ). The surface winds for today are forecast to be light and southerly, which means that little raptor migration should be expected. Looking ahead we see southerly winds persisting into the weekend, so you should have a few days of consistent birding conditions before these birds decide to head south.

Good Birding

David

  1. 2 GOLDEN-WINGED WARBLERS, many
YELLOW and BLACK and WHITE WARBLERS.
Some of these last two could be local breeders
    besides migrants. 1 BLACKBURNIAN,
    1 BLACK-THROATED BLUE, 1 CHESTNUT-SIDED,
1 MOURNING. 10 warbler species total. I had
migrants scattered around the National Park
dredge spoils. And in a bigger loose flock at
Wheelabrator. Both these places are in Gloucester
    County.
