Heavy migration last night

Light northeast winds set off heavy migration over the mid-Atlantic last night. Here’s the radar from 7:00pm last night through 5:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

Judging from a quick stroll around my yard this morning, this was the first of several big flights of White-throated Sparrows. They were everywhere! The velocity images suggests that most birds were moving N->S or slightly SE, which would favor inland locations, but not exclude hotspots such as Cape May from having a good flight this morning. Raptor migration should be good throughout the day today given the forecast tailwind.

Good Birding

  1. Went to Sandy Hook this morning. There was a huge influx of Yellow-rumped warblers, Golden Crown Kinglets. Based upon what we observed the Hook probably has thousands of these birds all throughout.
GC Kinglets outnumbered RC Kinglets 5 to one. The variety was low compared to Saturday. A few WT Sparrows as well as Savannah and Song. Double Digit No.Flickers were around. A couple of Brown Creepers and a cooperative Winter wren were in the locust grove. FOS for us Hermit Thrush in the garden.
Double digit on the Phoebes as well. We detected 1 Eastern Meadowlark in grassy field at K-lot.
