Wind and storms keep migrants from flying over northeast last night

While migration was heavy across the Central, Mississippi, and most of the Eastern, Flyway, southwest winds and strong thunderstorms kept birds from migrating over the northeast and parts of the mid-Atlantic US last night. Here’s the radar from 6:00pm yesterday through 6:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

There’s not much to say, except that you can see in the velocity images, how the winds shifted around from southwesterly last night to eventually northeasterly this morning. Fortunately, this should trigger some migration tonight; unfortunately, it occurred too late last night to result in any major influx of new arrivals today. The base reflectivity images support this, by showing little-to-no signal of birds heading southbound after the wind switch. Keep an eye to the radar tonight, as we should see a nice flight heading into Monday morning.

Good Birding
