Birds head west on easterly winds

It was another busy night for the Eastern Flyway, as northwest winds and clear skies dominated the region. Here’s the radar from 6:00pm last night through 6:00am this morning.

Frames are every 1/2 hour. Click on the thumbnail to view the full-sized animation.

The national composite shows moderate to heavy migration across the NE and mid-Atlantic region last night, although the densities appear lighter than two nights ago. Densities increased immediately after sunset and began to decline after midnight. The velocity images indicated most movement was from ENE->WSW, suggesting birds were heading inland on the easterly winds. Therefore expect coastal location to be less birdy than inland sites this morning. This should favor places like Chimney Rock, on the south end of the Watchung Mountains, in central NJ, as well as the Delaware Bay shore further south. Sites along the Delaware River (such as Washington’s Crossing and Palmayra) should also be good.

Good Birding

  1. Wow! Look at all those Ceruleans and Indigos out there. LOL

Nice flight, it has been slower down here lately though. Hopefully the storms will clear and the birds that are piled up will pack in here real soon.
