Back to the front

Remember how cool and beautiful it was yesterday after the passage of the cold front? Well, the mugginess that hugs you this morning should be a cue to what happened last night. Here’s the radar from sunset last night through 5:00am this morning.

Our friendly cold front has decided to return to the region in the form of a warm front (to be more specific it’s a stationary front, but to say that a stationary front has moved across the region just doesn’t sound right), bringing with it plenty of rain and southerly winds. This effectively shut down migration during last night and early this morning. The regional composite showed moderate levels of migration across most of the Northeast and northern Mid-Atlantic after sunset last night, with most of the migration event shutting down as the front marched northward. General flow over New Jersey was from the ENE->WSW, suggesting that the best birding today would be at hotspots in the central and western portions of the state. It looks like Pennsylvania will have received most of the birds originating from New York State, with only a small proportion of the birds having entered New Jersey from eastern New York.

For landbirds, go inland with your raingear. Especially good will be the places where the rain began after midnight so if that sound like your backyard check there first. For the really hydrophilic, some scanning off the coast might reveal an interesting seabird or two given the persistent southeast winds.

Good Birding

David
