…although this morning’s text message from Tom Johnson made me wish I had:
“morning flight very good at Higbee. Many birds on the ground too.”
I’ll get to posting the radar asap, but it’s suffice to say that birds were on the move last night, despite the locally hostile weather. Actually, given the northerly winds last night, a little rain isn’t much of a factor to a migrating bird. Heavy migration was apparent across New England and much of the Northeast and Mid-Atlantic last night with few birds appearing to push through to our south. This is probably why Tom is having such a fun time getting pelted with rain and cold up on the highest point in Cape May, New Jersey (full disclosure: that statistic has not been fact-checked).
Winds were generally out of the NE in Northern New Jersey, and more northerly further south. This should favor inland migrant traps, generally, but if the precipitation caused birds to fallout across the state then check your local patch for the chance at a fallout near you!
The radar will be up soon. Until then, Good Birding!
