Light and variable winds again last night triggered a light flight of nocturnal migration over most of the mid-Atlantic and northeastern US. The one exception appears to have been Maine which had been waiting for the effects of Irene to clear. The Caribou and Portland, ME radars both were ablaze with southbound migration last night. Otherwise migration was diffuse across most of the region again suggesting that only a few migration-ready birds are in the system right now. Those birds that did take to the sky were headed on a NE->SW trajectory, again favoring inland migrant traps to coastal ones.
Expect little migration over the next two nights as south winds increase across the region. We may see the next movement as early as Sunday night depending on how quickly the next cold front can move through. I’ll post an update with the radar sometime later this afternoon.
Good Birding
