Right now it looks like our best bet for heavy migration into the eastern mid-Atlantic will be tonight, when upper-level winds across New England and NY are out of the NNW. Expect upper-level winds to turn more northerly overnight and eventually northeasterly tomorrow (ouch!). That’s not the worst of it- right now it looks like low pressure will park itself over NJ on Sunday – Tuesday effectively diverting to our west the masses of birds migrating to our north. Right now the NYC radar is showing heavy southbound migration with some evidence that birds are correcting for displacement and heading to the NJ coast (anyone night-listening at Sandy Hook tonight!?) while birds over the rest of NJ area heading NW->SE, also good for coastal NJ. We’ll have to see how much the winds switch around overnight, but right now Sandy Hook and Cape May are looking promising for tomorrow morning. Inland migrant traps are still up-in-the-air right now… we’ll have to see if birds eventually take off from western NY given the current precipitation over the region.
More tomorrow before 6:00am!
Good Birding
