Well, we’ve had a few flights so far this season, but this one was definitely the densest nocturnal event to date. Migration was evident across the entire Plains region down into the Gulf states last night, with Central Wisconsin and Minnesota representing the northern extent of the flight. Ignoring the defective velocity image from the La Crosse radar, all indications were of a moderate density flight with a general heading of due north. Light south winds and clear skies were the recipe for the flight and we should expect new birds to be dispersed across the landscape this morning.
Look out for short-distance and early-season migrants such as various sparrows, Eastern Phoebes, more American Robins, American Woodcock, and possibly some FOS birds such as an Eastern Towhee. Since birds will be widely dispersed this morning, check out the local spring hotspots for the best chance at diversity and density.
Good Birding
